Stephen Hodkinson is Emeritus Professor of Ancient History at the University of Nottingham and founder of its Centre for Spartan and Peloponnesian Studies. He was co-organiser of the International Sparta Seminar and Director of the AHRC project “Sparta in Comparative Perspective: Ancient to Modern”.
He is the author of many studies of Spartan history and society. He has been awarded Honorary Citizenship of modern Sparta for his global dissemination of Spartan history. He was historical adviser to Kieron Gillen’s graphic novel Three (2014) set in fourth-century Sparta. He is actively engaged in challenging current politicised misappropriations of Sparta.
He is currently writing an article titled “Spartans on the Capitol” and a popular book on Sparta for Reaktion Press.
